Choosing the best wood coatings for kitchens and bathrooms: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to high-stress areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and indoor pool spaces, customers often ask us which type of coating is most suitable for their project. In this article, we will explore the various types of finishes and why some are better suited than others.

Importance of Choosing the Right Coating

Kitchens and bathrooms are high-moisture environments, and incorrect coating choices can lead to damage and deterioration over time. Because of this, it’s important to select coatings that will provide protection against water, warmth, and excess moisture.

Wood Coating Recommendations

For kitchens and bathrooms, we recommend using either a 2-component water-based product or a polyurethane. Here’s why:

Surface Strength

Two-component coatings use an activator that creates a strong chemical bond within the paint surface. This results in high chemical and mechanical resistance which is perfect for these high-traffic environments.

Waterproof

Once a 2k product is completely cured (which usually takes around 7 days), the finish becomes impermeable to water, making it an excellent choice for kitchen and bathroom units.

Easy to Clean

Both types of products can be easily cleaned with warm soapy water once cured, which is ideal for regular maintenance. However, using strong chemicals or abrasive materials during cleaning can damage the surface.

Lightfast

In natural light-rich areas like kitchens and bathrooms, it’s important to ensure that the furniture stays looking beautiful over time. Two-component lacquers and paints with lightfast properties help to achieve this goal while still providing functionality.

At Redwood, we offer two main types of wood coatings for kitchens and bathrooms: a 2K water-based and polyurethane. Both options come with primers, coloured topcoats, and clears, and feature a natural effect.  The PU range has the additional option of a metallic collection and an array of high gloss options.
